Hey. I’m Maryellen Hooper. I’ve been a Stand-Up Comic for over 25 years, writing comedy about my husband, Mark, for 18 years and lost my heart forever when my boys Nate and Zeke were born 9 & 6 years ago… (But I gained a lifetime of material!)

We moved from Los Angeles to Celebration, FL 5 years ago in an attempt to be closer to family and simplify our life.

I’m kind of a hippie-Mom trapped in a suburban-Mom’s life. I want to save the planet, the whales, the children in Africa  while I’m crafting Christmas gifts for my family from our pile of recyclables …I want all my children’s toys to be made of wood that supports the rainforest. I want to grow all my food in the backyard and whip up tasty, vegetarian meals from scratch.

The only trouble is by the time I get Nate dressed for school, somehow make him a lunch with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich that’s peanut-free;  fish the Star Wars figures out of the toilet; explain to Zeke that the dog’s water dish is just for the dog to drink; shout to Nate, “I found your crayons!” as I’m cleaning up the dog vomit and then humbly apologize to my husband for falling asleep during our “date” last night…

Well, frankly…I’m just too tired to be green.

But I continue the quest every day. I currently have over 37 canvas grocery bags.  Now if I can just remember to bring them to the store..

    Hello Maryellen,
We have a sorta similar outlook…I just can’t be funny in front of a live audience, only when I have time to think about and craft responses..
Check out my blog if you’d like: http://threeunda3.blogspot.com/
Do you have a ‘follow this blog’ option on yours?
    Cheers,

    Hey, Kelly,
I think you’re right. I laughed out loud at your blog which tells me we definitely have the same sense of humor. I’m so glad you found me. My “follow this blog” is on the front page. (thanks for asking). Looking forward to your next post.

  6. Maryellen,

I just received an email on the 3 Blonde Moms and thought of you….so I googled. You have always been that artist that I looked up to! And such a joy to watch and talk with back in your days at the Icehouse. I still remember the advice you gave me (that I will keep in the vault) but you were very wise and spoke a lot of truth. – thank you for that – YOu were/are such an inspiration! Glad you are doing well. The boys are adorable! and hope to see you live soon 🙂

Hi, all the way from Australia ….. we had found an emaciated beardie in our back yard and was on the web looking for ways to “cure” the poor thing …. after reading your page, with tounge in cheek, im not sure wether im less stressed or feeling bad about laughing at this particular blog, he,he. Wonder if you got another or not??

  8. stinkyflowers Says:

Hey, Amy…sorry you were forced into the Beardie rescue spiral of doom…just because you have a caring heart! Now we have some kind of horned dragon lizard thing that won’t eat either. Why? Because he was free at Repticon. Guess we know why now. Good luck with your rescue. Remember that helping him to the peaceful “other side” is a noble gesture too.

    Hey Maryellen!
Just won tickets to see 3 Blond Moms from Macaroni Kid (if you don’t get their emails… you should!) and remembered that you had done the show at one point. It’s been forever since we’ve talked (you were working on the house you and Mark bought in Pas.) so I looked up your web site, saw you had a blog. Enjoying it. Glad to see you’re still sharing your humor with the world. I’m looking forward to seeing the show at Universal Citywalk. It will be a nice, much needed night out for this mom. 🙂 Braeden is turning 2 next week. Wow how life changes.
    Cheers!

    Hi Maryellen,

My friends and I absolutely fell in love with you after seeing your Lounge Lizards special on Comedy Central. I can’t tell you how many times we did “Eat em up gators, eat em up” cheer. Ah memories…

Every once in awhile I will think back to that performance and curse the invention of the dvd seeing as I did away with all of my vhs including my recording of that special. I even tivoed (that can’t be how you spell it) it at one point but alas that tivo is no longer with us (may he rest in peace).

So in an attempt to satisfy my Maryellen Hooper craving I turn to the all knowing Google Gods. I am always so disappointed when I get no results. I did a search today to find the first handful of clips but we’re talking years of coming up empty handed. Not one clip is on YouTube that I can find. There are countless educational videos on why one should refrain from jumping off of (insert object here), play with (insert sharp/flammable/electric item here), attempt to cut down a large tree located very close to (insert valuable asset such as house, car, family member etc. here) and so very many more incredibly moronic acts caught on film. And yet no one bothered to capture some of the funniest 30 minutes aired on television? Really?

OK I’m through ranting. I figure if anyone has a copy or knows how to get one, you most certainly would, right? If you wouldn’t mind sharing that bit of info with me and the rest of the online community, I (we) would be forever grateful.

By the way, your blog is hilarious. And I really enjoy all of your stand-up performances. I just miss that one so very much…

Keep doing what you do. Spreading laughter is a wonderful gift.

    Marissa

I followed a facebook link to your website today, wondering why the name seemed so familiar to me, and then I figured out where I knew you from . . . My wife and I really enjoyed your show at The Improv in Orlando maybe four or five years ago, so what a surprise to find that you now live in our town! How cool! I look forward to reading more posts from you.

  13. Dave Taylor Says:

Hi Maryellen, My wife and I first saw you on a ship and after that saw you in Tampa. We both thought you were great. Are you coming to Tampa again in the near future or possibly Orlando? Glad your living here now.
